Have been thinking about digital and i don't like the way you have to subscribe to sky hd, there must be a work around for less money. so i've been thinking would this work? in theory the sky signal comes in, through the scart to the dvd recorder and then out through the hdmi cable to the lcd tv?

Sure, that will work, but the signal quality will be no better than what you started with. The signal won't magically be changed to HD. Copy an old 78 record into 5.1 channel Dolby DVD and you'll still have a 78-quality mono DVD.
